Why you should reupholster old furniture

You have a sofa that you've been sitting on for years and now, the fabric is ripped, dirty and worn out. Yet, it's your favourite couch and you left with two questions: Should you purchase a new sofa? Or, reupholster it? Tricky, right?

When it comes to reupholstering any item of furniture, consider the quality of furniture and its sentimental value before deciding. A new couch or chair might cost less than reupholstering but not last as long as older, quality furniture.

Here are a few factors to take into consideration before make the right choice:

1. Quality of the furniture piece: If the furniture piece is still sturdy with a quality frame, keep it. Old furniture is built better and frames can last up until 10 to 15 years. Only replace a couch or sofa if the frame is damaged. If the frame remains strong, reupholstering gives you a chance to restore your couch with more control over the look and shape of the cushions, patterns and colour.

2. Cost comparison: Reupholstering an item can cost you more than purchasing a new sofa or chair; depending on the labour and fabric required. For example, to reupholster an arm chair will cost about R1750,00 and requires at least 6 to 8 metres of fabric whereas purchasing a new chair chair will cost about R3500,00 excluding any fabric. Whether the cost of reupholstery is worth it, it depends on the quality and sentimental value of the furniture.
